This Week in Mrs. R-S’s Class… asd

Communication Skills…

Our 5th graders will begin a new book, The Fighting Ground by Avi.  This novel is a historical fiction about a boy named Jonathan, who is ready to go to war against the British.  He longs to battle for glory, just as his brother and cousin have.  So when Jonathan hears the bell toll, calling men to fight he is eager to join them.  He doesn’t realize that in just twenty-four hours, his life will be forever changed—by war, by his fellow soldiers, and by the horrible choices he must make.
Sixth and Seventh graders will begin reading Pam Munoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising.  In this Pura Belpre Award winning book Esperanza believed her life would always be wonderful and would always be in Mexico. But a sudden tragedy changes everything! Esperanza’s whole world is turned upside down as she and her mother must leave Mexico and flee to California where they settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. The hardships continue and Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances—because her life and her mother’s depend on it!
Our 7th/8th grade reading group will continue with their reading Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.  This classic tale centers on Anne who is finally adopted from an asylum after being orphaned due to the death of her parents.  Of course Anne is not your typical eleven year old.  Her enchanting perspective on nature, people, and life make her very interesting and most endearing!
In Social Studies all students will continue their study of the location of the 50 states and the capital of each one.  In addition to this study, our 5th graders will continue their unit of study on the American Revolution.  Our 6th-8th graders will conclude their study of the Middle Ages.
